Carry-On Luggage: Hardshell Suitcases Checked Against Airline Limits

If you fly American, Delta, United, Alaska or JetBlue, a rolling suitcase has to fit 22 x 14 x 9 in with its wheels and handles counted. Of the three hardshells in the table, the Bellroy Transit Carry-On comes in under that by a tenth of an inch and the Monos Carry-On Pro sits exactly on it, so both are borderline fits. The Away Bigger Carry-On is over on every side and fits only Southwest’s and Frontier’s 24 x 16 x 10 in.

Exteriors and list prices are the makers’ own, read on 19 October 2026 from bellroy.com, monos.com and awaytravel.com; all three makers state that the exterior includes the wheels. Airline limits were read from the airlines’ own pages on 23 October 2026. Fits means at least 1.3 cm (0.5 in) to spare on every side; Borderline means at or under the limit with less than that.

How to Ship Luggage Instead of Checking It (2026)

LugLess’s quotes against American’s bag fees, New York to Beverly Hills: shipping a suitcase costs more, and here is when it is still worth it.

A Hardshell Has No Give

A rigid shell cannot be pressed into a sizer, so the exterior its maker publishes is the size that counts at the gate. Bellroy, Monos and Away publish that figure with the wheels included, and the baggage pages of American, Delta, United, Southwest, Alaska, JetBlue and Frontier all say they measure that way.

None of the three cases gets past Lufthansa’s 55 x 40 x 23 cm: all three are too long, and the Away is too deep as well. Ryanair’s and Vueling’s 55 x 40 x 20 cm cabin bag, which comes with a higher fare or as an add-on, turns them away on depth as well. A backpack does better here. Tortuga lists the Travel Backpack Lite at 55 x 35 x 20 cm, a borderline fit at Lufthansa, Ryanair and Vueling with nothing to spare on length, or on depth at the last two. The size limits guide lists other packs that fit.

The compliance checker takes any suitcase size, in inches or centimeters, and sets it against 18 airlines.

Common Question

Does the Away Bigger Carry-On count as a carry-on?

On Southwest and Frontier, yes. Of the European airlines here, British Airways and easyJet are the nearest misses, at 2.4 cm too long for their 56 cm (easyJet sells its large cabin bag as an add-on).
