How to Ship Luggage Instead of Checking It (2026)
Shipping a suitcase across the country costs more than checking it. On 25 October 2026, LugLess quoted $67.99 to send a checked-size bag a week ahead from a New York hotel to a Beverly Hills hotel, against $45 to check a first bag on American, or $55 for a second, paid online. Send it three days before it has to arrive and the same shipment cost $229.99. Ship when hauling the bag is the real problem, as with golf clubs, skis or a one-way move. For one ordinary suitcase, check it.

What LugLess Charged, New York to Beverly Hills
LugLess sorts bags into three classes by billable weight and total size. These are its quotes for one bag from The Plaza in New York to The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, arriving Monday 9 November, read from its booking page on 25 October 2026. 2 November was the earliest send date it offered for that arrival.
| LugLess class (billable weight, length + width + height) | Sent 2 Nov | Sent 4 Nov | Sent 6 Nov | Checked on American, online |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carry-on (25 lb, 49 in) | $47.99 | $92.99 | $152.99 | Free in the cabin only if it fits 22 x 14 x 9 in |
| Checked (50 lb, 62 in) | $67.99 | $142.99 | $229.99 | $45 first bag, $55 second |
| Oversize (75 lb, 71 in) | $92.99 | $224.99 | $367.99 | Standard bag if it is within 62 in and 50 lb on the scale |
Billable weight is the greater of the scale weight and the dimensional weight, length x width x height / 139. A 28 x 20 x 14 in suitcase bills at 57 lb on LugLess’s calculator however lightly it is packed, which puts it in Oversize, while American checks the same case as a standard bag up to 50 lb. Only a smaller case gets the Checked price.
What the Airline Charges
American’s baggage page lists domestic Main Cabin fees for tickets issued from 9 April 2026 at $45 online and $50 at the airport for the first bag, and $55 and $60 for the second, up to 62 linear inches and 50 lb. Those are per bag, per direction, so a round trip with two checked bags runs $200 online. Luggage Forward, LugLess’s door-to-door sister company, quotes its own New York to Los Angeles example at $139 for a 50 lb bag.
How LugLess Works
Enter the origin, destination, arrival date and bag class, then pick a send date. The earlier the send date, the slower and cheaper the service. A standard suitcase, duffel, golf travel case, ski bag or sturdy box all qualify.
Leave out medications, electronics with batteries, aerosols and alcohol, and keep a copy of the label inside the bag in case the outside one tears. Print the label, show a digital label at the counter, or have one mailed to you.
Take the bag to any UPS or FedEx location by the end of the send date you booked; a late drop-off can push the delivery date. LugLess suggests sending ground shipments 5 to 7 business days before you need them, longer around holidays.
LugLess says homes and businesses usually need no signature and that hotels hold the bag at the front desk under the reservation name. College dorms, short-term rentals, cruise ports and airports are the awkward ones: LugLess sends those to a carrier hold location for you to collect.
What Can Go Wrong
Watch the return trip: the bag you ship home leaves days before you do and may land after you, so anything you need the morning you get back rides in the carry-on. If a shipment is late, LugLess gives account credit on eligible bookings: $10 when the carrier approves a claim that LugLess files for you, and $20 for delays LugLess itself caused. Luggage Forward includes up to $500 of value protection; LugLess’s pages do not state a coverage amount, so ask before shipping anything you could not replace.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is shipping luggage cheaper than checking it?
Not on the route quoted here. LugLess’s checked-size quote from New York to Beverly Hills, sent a week ahead, was $67.99, above both of American’s online fees, $45 for a first bag and $55 for a second. LugLess’s advertised prices start at $25 a bag, so shorter routes and smaller bags come in lower; its booking page prices any route before you pay.
How far ahead should I ship?
LugLess recommends 5 to 7 business days for ground shipping, its cheapest service, and more around holidays. Air service arrives sooner and costs more.
Can I ship luggage overseas with LugLess?
LugLess handles domestic routes and sends international shipments to its sister company, Luggage Forward, which delivers to 200+ countries and territories. Customs duties and taxes are extra.
