Best Aluminum Carry-On Luggage (2026): Fit, Weight and Price
The best aluminum carry-on for most flyers is the Away Carry-On: Aluminum Edition. It is half an inch inside the 22 x 14 x 9 in limit American, Delta and United publish on length and width, and its 9 in depth meets that limit exactly, so the sizer has the last word. It is also the only case here that Fits British Airways’ 56 x 45 x 25 cm. For Lufthansa, the Carl Friedrik Carry-on in aluminium holds the most, 41 L, and costs well under a Rimowa Original Cabin, though Carl Friedrik does not say whether its 55 x 38 x 23 cm includes wheels; the Rimowa is confirmed at exactly 55 x 40 x 23 cm with them. Every ranked case weighs 4.3 kg or more empty, and Lufthansa’s cabin bag limit is 8 kg.
| Case | Price | Size (maker’s figure) | Weight | Volume | US 22 x 14 x 9 in | Lufthansa 55 x 40 x 23 cm |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Away Carry-On: Aluminum Edition | $625 | 21.5 x 13.5 x 9 in, wheels and handles included | 4.8 kg (10.5 lbs) | 32 L | Borderline | Borderline |
| TUMI 19 Degree Aluminum International Carry-On | $1,295 | 22 x 14 x 9 in | 5.0 kg (11 lbs) | 31 L | Borderline, if wheels are included | Too long |
| Carl Friedrik The Carry-on, Aluminium | $945 | 55 x 38 x 23 cm (21.7 x 15 x 9.1 in) | 4.5 kg (9.9 lbs) | 41 L | Too wide and deep | Borderline, if wheels are included |
| Rimowa Original Cabin | $1,550 | 55 x 40 x 23 cm, wheels and handles included | 4.3 kg (9.5 lbs) | 35 L | Too wide and deep | Borderline |
Fits means at least 1.3 cm (0.5 in) to spare on every side of the published limit; Borderline means within it with less than that. We compare each case in the airline’s own unit, using the maker’s figure in that unit where the maker gives one.
What Aluminum Gets You, and What It Costs
An aluminum shell dents where polycarbonate flexes, and the makers sell that as character. Afar’s review of the Rimowa found the shell dents and scratches easily and that Rimowa’s guarantee does not cover cosmetic wear; Gear Patrol’s aluminum roundup found the Away still picks up dents, and one of its writers brought an Arlo Skye case back dented after its first trip. In return you get a latched frame with no zipper to split, which CNN Underscored named as the Away’s main advantage over its polycarbonate sibling. Neither Away’s nor Rimowa’s aluminum case is sold on Amazon, so neither is linked here.
You pay for it in weight. The lightest case here, the Rimowa, weighs 4.3 kg empty; the Bellroy Transit, a polycarbonate case of similar size, weighs 3.1 kg. Of the three aluminum cases within Lufthansa’s size (the Carl Friedrik only if its figure includes wheels), the empties leave between 3.2 and 3.7 kg of its 8 kg for everything you pack. Air France and KLM allow 12 kg for the cabin bag and small bag together, and Ryanair Priority 10 kg, though no case here is within Ryanair’s 20 cm depth.
Away Carry-On: Aluminum Edition
| Best for | US domestic flights on American, Delta, United, JetBlue and Alaska |
| Size | 21.5 x 13.5 x 9 in (54.6 x 34.3 x 22.9 cm), wheels and handles included |
| Weight and volume | 4.8 kg (10.5 lbs), 32 L |
| Closure | Zipper-free aluminum frame, two TSA-accepted latches |
| Warranty | Away LifetimeCare: five years of free repairs and one replacement, then repair support |
| Fit | US majors Borderline (0.5 in spare on length and width, none in depth); Southwest Fits; British Airways and easyJet large Fits; Lufthansa and Air France/KLM Borderline |
Of the four ranked cases it is the only one with any spare length and width at the US limit, though its depth still makes it Borderline. The trade is weight and space: CNN Underscored found it about 3 lb heavier than Away’s polycarbonate Carry-On with less room inside, and reported wheels that rattle and sometimes stick.
Away also makes an Aluminum Bigger Carry-On, 22.7 x 14.5 x 9.6 in and 38 L. It is too big for the US majors on all three sides and Borderline at Southwest’s 24 x 16 x 10 in.
TUMI 19 Degree Aluminum International Carry-On
| Best for | Buyers who want TUMI’s aluminum at the US 22 x 14 x 9 in size, bought on Amazon |
| Size | 22 x 14 x 9 in (TUMI UK: 56 x 35.5 x 23 cm, which converts to just over 22 x 14 x 9 in); TUMI does not say whether wheels are included. We use the inch figure for US airlines and the cm figure for European ones. |
| Weight and volume | 5.0 kg (11 lbs), 31 L |
| Closure | Frame opening with two TSA combination locks |
| Warranty | 5-year limited warranty |
| Fit | US majors Borderline if TUMI’s figure includes wheels (exactly at the limit); British Airways and easyJet large Borderline; Lufthansa too long; Air France/KLM too long and too wide |
The case TUMI calls International is too long for every 55 cm European limit, so it is really a US case. It is the heaviest and smallest one on this page, 11 lbs for 31 L, and costs about twice the Away for a near-identical US fit. A FlyerTalk owner comparing TUMI and Away aluminum thought TUMI’s diagonal ridges hide scuffs better. Amazon sells it through Shopbop, an Amazon company, and stock there was thin when we checked.
Carl Friedrik The Carry-on, Aluminium
| Best for | Lufthansa travelers who want the most room in aluminum |
| Size | 55 x 38 x 23 cm (21.7 x 15 x 9.1 in); Carl Friedrik does not say whether wheels are included |
| Weight and volume | 4.5 kg (9.9 lbs), 41 L |
| Closure | TSA combination locks, steel-reinforced corners and hinges, Hinomoto wheels |
| Warranty | Lifetime warranty, 60-day returns |
| Fit | Lufthansa Borderline if the figure includes wheels (exactly on length and depth); British Airways and easyJet large Borderline; US majors too wide and 0.1 in too deep; Air France/KLM too wide |
It holds 41 L, 6 L more than the Rimowa in a case 2 cm narrower, for about 60 percent of the Rimowa’s price, and both carry lifetime warranties. Carl Friedrik’s own buyer reviews include an owner who found the aluminium scratches and dents easily. Travel Away, which used one on a trip, reported it looked nearly new afterwards and that the weight shows on long days.
Rimowa Original Cabin
| Best for | Buyers who want the original grooved aluminum case and a lifetime functional guarantee |
| Size | 55 x 40 x 23 cm (21.7 x 15.8 x 9.1 in), wheels and handles included |
| Weight and volume | 4.3 kg (9.5 lbs), 35 L |
| Closure | TSA-approved locks, Multiwheel ball-bearing wheels, stage-free telescopic handle |
| Warranty | Lifetime guarantee covering functional damage; cosmetic wear excluded |
| Fit | Lufthansa Borderline (exactly on every side); British Airways and easyJet large Borderline; US majors too wide and 0.1 in too deep; Air France/KLM too wide |
It matches Lufthansa’s 55 x 40 x 23 cm exactly. It is the lightest aluminum case here and the most expensive. Afar’s reviewers found the wheels held up on sand and mud, and their packed Cabin went over 15 lb (6.8 kg), close to the 7 kg Economy limit Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand and Qantas set on international flights.
Left Out
The Monos Aluminum Carry-On was sold out in every color on monos.com when we checked, and at 22.2 x 14.2 x 9.3 in it is over the US limit on all three sides. We could not find Samsonite’s Lite-Box Alu on Samsonite’s US site, and its weight differs between Samsonite UK (5.1 kg) and Selfridges (4.7 kg), so it is not ranked here. Away’s Aluminum Edge line uses a polycarbonate shell on an aluminum frame, so it is not an aluminum case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which aluminum carry-on fits United, Delta and American?
The Away Carry-On: Aluminum Edition, Borderline because its 9 in depth meets the limit exactly. The TUMI 19 Degree is at the limit on every side.
Is an aluminum carry-on worth the weight?
Only if the latched frame and the look matter more to you than packing weight. Every case here weighs 4.3 kg or more empty, against 3.1 kg for the polycarbonate Bellroy Transit, and on Lufthansa’s 8 kg cabin limit that difference is clothing you leave at home.
Do aluminum suitcases dent?
Yes. Afar, Gear Patrol and a buyer review on Carl Friedrik’s site all report dents and scratches, and Rimowa’s guarantee excludes cosmetic wear. The makers’ warranties cover function, such as wheels, handles and locks.
Which aluminum carry-on fits Lufthansa?
The Rimowa and the Away are Borderline at 55 x 40 x 23 cm, and so is the Carl Friedrik if its published size includes wheels. Each uses more than half of Lufthansa’s 8 kg before you pack.
